Will a VPN increase my ping?

Slightly — but with NordVPN it's only 3-4ms extra. That's imperceptible in gameplay. If your ISP is throttling gaming traffic, a VPN may actually reduce your ping by bypassing the throttle.

Can I get banned for using a VPN in games?

No major game bans VPN usage. Valorant's Vanguard, CS2's VAC, and all other anti-cheat systems are compatible with VPNs. Using a VPN to access different regions is generally fine — using it to cheat matchmaking systems could theoretically violate ToS but we're not aware of any bans for this.
